Class Descriptions

Mindfulness for Spiritual Awakening: Reconnect to your spirit as you are guided through easy, mindful movement paying special attention to both the physical body as well as thoughts and emotions. Gentle movement and breathing exercises will deepen your awareness within the body while connecting you to your inner source of power.

Restorative Yoga: Restorative yoga is a practice that is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching. If you take a restorative class, you may hardly move at all, doing just a few postures in the course of an hour. It is a completely different experience than most contemporary yoga.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga: Developed at the Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts, Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an empirically validated, clinical intervention for complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The TCTSY program is included in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) database published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). In addition to yoga, TCTSY has foundations in Trauma Theory, Attachment Theory, and Neuroscience.

Vinyasa Groove: This practice focuses on syncing the breath with a continuous flow of movement. Vinyasa is a strong practice that typically includes sun salutations, standing poses, standing balance, stretches, and basic inversions that benefit the mind and body by building heat, endurance, flexibility, strength, focus, and body awareness. Music changes weekly to produce the “groove.” Beginner and Intermediate level class.

Yin: A Yin yoga class usually consists of a series of long-held, passive floor poses that mainly work the lower part of the body – the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues. The poses are held for up to five minutes, sometimes longer.

Yoga Nidra: Benefit from rest and restoration in this extremely healing practice. This class consists of breathing exercises (pranayama) and guided meditation to put you in the deepest possible state of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness. Benefits include the release of muscular, emotional and mental tension.

March Workshops

Inner Truths: Dismantling the Uncontested Legacy of the External Guru in Yoga                 Friday, March 6, 2020
6-8 PM

This special Satsang with Kristen Wood, RYT 200, and Venessa Bowers, LCSW-C, RYT 200 developed out of the desire for advocacy and healing due to continued disclosures of sexual assault, abuse, sexual misconduct, coercion, and manipulation that has occurred and has long remained well-known secrets in the major yoga lineages such as Ashtanga, Bikram, Kundalini, and Iyengar. Satsang is a word which comes from Sanskrit, meaning to associate with true people, or to be in the company of true people. It is also related to sitting in a group meeting seeking that association. We will not be celebrating external gurus during this time, regardless of lineage. We will be dismantling a culture that continues prop up external gurus and, in the process,, continues to silence, shun, discredit and “other” people who have the courage to speak truth. to power We will privilege the holding of space for each other. This is a donation based Satsang and all procedures will be donated to the Life Crisis Center in Salisbury. Suggested donation is $10

She specializes in working with children and adults who have been affected by traumatic experiences. She uses creative expression and mindfulness as treatment modalities in her clinical work in conjunction with more traditional therapeutic interventions. Venessa’s teaching style seeks to create deep thought, inner connection, and release of things no longer serving the individual. Her classes can have an therapeutic feel to them, but they are not therapy classes. Her approach to yoga uses the Karmic path, which is the “yoga of action in the service of others” and her style has been called “gritty and real.”  Venessa completed her 200 hr Yoga Teacher in 2018 and completed her 20 hour certification in children’s yoga with Radiant Child Yoga, and completed 40 hours of Trauma Center – Trauma Sensitive Yoga training with David Emerson and Jenn Turner at Kripalu.

Heather Cherry, 200 RYT has been practicing yoga on and off for many years. What started off as a way of stretching after other athletic pursuits turned into a way of life in 2016. Heather uses yoga to heal both physical pain and anxiety and now shares that healing with everyone who participates in the classes she teaches. She currently teaches Les Mills’ Body Flow and a variety of yoga styles at Shore Zen Yoga Studio inside Olympia Fitness Clubs.

Veronica uses innovative, alternative approaches, such as clinical hypnosis, Reiki and energy therapy, as well as traditional counseling. Her approaches have proved to be a good complement to modern medicine empowering people to get well faster. Veronica completed her 200 hr Yoga Teacher Training 2018.

Travis Lancaster, 500 RYT has been an avid athlete her entire life and eventually reached a physical dead end. Knee surgeries, ankle surgeries, years of impact, and common body misalignments left her with chronic knee pain, degenerating cartilage, arthritis, scar tissue, bone fragments and limited mobility. She could no longer keep up her fitness regimen and devastatingly had to quit her life-long love affair with running, as more surgery seemed to be the only (and bleak) option. That is when she discovered the Bikram method of hot yoga, and her life has been changing ever since. Yoga had been part of her fitness routine for more than ten years, but it wasn’t until she discovered this particular method that she developed a true and devoted practice. She have now had a dedicated yoga practice for the past five years and have slowly but surely been healing (without surgery), not just her physical body but her emotional and spiritual ones as well. Travis earned her 200 RYT certification in hot yoga at the Bikram Yoga Rockville studio, in the spring of 2017. After a year of teaching yoga her desire for more knowledge was burning so she traveled to Brooklyn, NY and earned her 300 RYT from International yoga teacher Jared McCann. Holding a Bachelors in Fine Arts and Master’s degree in teaching, Travis is a former local high school art teacher and track coach. She took time away from her career to raise her son, and now it has been excited to return to her teaching occupation in a different arena. It has been a great fit to combine her teaching experience with her love of athletics and holistic health to help spread the vast benefits of this healing practice to our community. In June 2019, Travis opened her own studio in Salisbury with co-owner, Dana Fields, 500 RYT called Meta Yoga Studio.

Betsy Long has been a practicing Licensed Massage Therapist for 10 years at Olympia Fitness Clubs in Salisbury. She has since used her knowledge and understanding of the body to start learning and applying the benefits of yoga. After practicing in classes and on her own for about 2 years, she became certified in Hatha Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Yoga For All™ – a Body Positive Yoga format. Although new to the Yoga world – Betsy is passionate about learning, especially when it comes to reaching out to those who may not feel they fit a “yoga mold”. She believes the benefits of yoga are available to everyone regardless of experience, age, gender, size, flexibility, or injury.

Kristen Wood, 200 RYT Kundalini Yoga InstructorKristen Wood, 200 RYT  has been practicing Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan since 2006. In 2010, after a year of intensive study, she became certified as a 200 hour Kundalini Research Institute Level 1 Instructor. In 2013, Kristen became certified as a Kundalini Conscious Pregnancy Instructor. She has found Kundalini Yoga to be deeply transformative and healing for the mind, body and soul. It has helped provide the tools to successfully navigate and manage every aspect of her life ranging from personal to professional. Kristen hopes every student will leave the class feeling more deeply connected with themselves and with the world around them.
