A Return to Wellness

We live in a modern society and in times, where we are working to fix symptoms without being aware that we are doing it the hard way. One of Plato’s quotes goes something like this: “The cure of the part should not be attempted without the treatment of the whole. No attempt should be made to cure the body without the soul. If the body and head are to be healthy you must begin by curing the mind. Let no one persuade you to cure the head until he has first given you his soul to be cured.” This quote clearly implies that the journey to wellness needs to be holistic, a mind-body-spirit approach. For example, when our body hurts, we think it’s a problem of the body, but have we thought that it may not be a body problem but a mind and/or soul issue?

We have conditioned ourselves to treat the symptom, if we have a headache of we tend to reach for a pill to take care of it. Often times stress, illnesses, life struggles and physical and emotional pain are not the problem in itself. The true problem may be that we are in a job that doesn’t inspire us, we may be in a toxic relationship, we may be scared about our finances and our financial future, and we are afraid to make changes because of fear of failure.

Alberto Villoldo, in his book One Spirit Medicine offers an approach to healing and wellness. He begins by encouraging you to discover your inner healer, shedding the old ways of being, overcoming fears and creating stillness to hear your inner wisdom. He strongly emphasizes a healthy diet that promotes good brain functioning combined with soul and mind work.

How can one return to WELLNESS in a way that can be sustained through life?

First begin with learning about foods that power your brain functioning instead of eating foods that create a foggy and forgetful brain.   This process can be done slowly and don’t become overwhelmed with the amount of information that is available nowadays. Begin by slowly reducing the amount of sugar, carbohydrates, and processed foods that you consume. Add more fresh vegetables as you possibly can. Again make the changes slowly so your brain doesn’t sabotage you.

Second, begin meditating and reflecting daily so you can learn to listen to your heart for guidance and wisdom. Your heart holds the code to your life’s purpose. When you learn to hear the subtle voice of your heart you feel deeply connected to life and others at this moment you know you are on the right path.

Third, learn compassion, forgiveness and how to love yourself and others. Remember that we are all doing the best we can with what we know and what we have at any given moment. Compassion, forgiveness and love create miracles in our lives.

When we achieve WELLNESS inevitably we are invited to make a difference in our lives and the lives of others. We were all born with greatness inside us and our journey on earth is to manifest it and to make this world a better place. And always remember that the only expert on you is YOU!
