Awakening the Healer Within

Modern research tells us that 75-80% of doctors’ visits are stress related and most physicians agree that how patients think and feel about themselves is a major factor in influencing their state of health.  This is great news because this means that our health and wellness depends mostly on us.

Ilene McMahon tells us that, “stress is born from the life within, we are the source and we are the cure.  But first we must choose to see the world differently.  They key is learning to love yourself; simplify, trust and let go….”  This seems like simple advice and easy to implement, however, we struggle to make it happen because it requires us to be mindful of how we live our lives.  Modern life has become hectic, demands are increasing, and we are struggling to keep up.  Also we live in a society that tells us we can be more, do more, and have more and this creates internal needs that are not real.  This constant doing and striving and leaving little time for leisure and enjoying the simple wonders of life.

In modern times, we want things to happen right away so we take a pill, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs to have the desired effect of relaxation and to lower our high levels of stress without much effort from our part.  We are finding out the hard way that this approach does not work and it is not sustainable for our bodies long term.  These methods have become our modern addictions.

In one of my trips to Chile I met a former emergency room physician who had become an acupuncturist and herbalist to complement his allopathic medicine to help his patients heal in a way that was more harmonious with nature.  He said that the only way for people to truly heal was by raising their level of consciousness.  I understood what he meant, but most people have no idea what that means.  Raising your levels of consciousness means to become aware of what is going on inside you, and around you. It also means to come to terms with the fact that life on this earth is about a spiritual journey.  This requires a healthy amount of ownership for your own health and most of us don’t want to assume that responsibility.  We want something outside of us to fix the problem within us.

When we are faced with an illness, physical or emotional, we must see it as an opportunity for growth and expansion.  In my own experience, I was born with a congenital malformation and I had medical treatment all my life and had surgery to correct the problem but all it did was to manage the symptoms.  One day I came to the realization that I could heal this issue forever on my own and I did.  I never needed medication or medical treatment again.  In my line of work, I see people healing themselves often when they assume responsibility and take ownership for their healing.  Learning how to listen to the messages of your body and how to heal yourself is part of your life’s journey and here is where your level of consciousness rises. However, this is not an easy journey because it requires commitment and a gentle discipline to take care of yourself and we are not taught how to do that.  Most of us learn the hard way.  When people come to our center they often ask me how did you come up with the idea to create a wellness center? my answer is: “out of misery and suffering.  I had to figure out how to heal myself.”  This does not mean that I don’t have my share of struggles today because I do, like most of us, but every day I build the confidence through my gentle discipline of a daily routine of gratitude, prayer, mindfulness, meditation, yoga, physical exercise and proper nutrition.

Healing oneself is not rocket science, we can all do it.  It requires that we set the intention to do it and the path will appear in front of us.  If I can do it, you can do it.
